MAYOR’S MESSAGE

One of the most needed and required departments, but least known to the public is the Watauga Information Technology Department. This department is managed by only three personnel, but is extremely proficient on how it handles its business.

This department started in 1996 with Lt. Joe Scott of the Police Department, and two years later, Bradley Fraley took over the helm and is now the Director of that department. Brad has had 23 years of experience, 18 with our city. There are two System Administrators who are very proficient with the making of this department. The team consists of Kevin Song and Trang Nguyen. Kevin, has a degree in Math and Computer Science, and Trang Nguyen has seven years experience in the field, four and a half in our city.  They both can handle anything involving computing, audio, video, telecommunications, networking and all aspects of the I.T. realm. The department’s mission is to provide for the operation and development of the city through the implementation and support of cost effective technologies while enhancing the efficiency of city staff while facilitating effective information flow between the city and its citizens.

There are several programs that this department accomplishes its tasks which are: PIO Social Media, Security Compliance, Business Continuity, Information Flow, Daily Support and Workplace Efficiency. These programs serve each particular department of the city such as public information and social media; this program includes: Watauga City Government, Watauga Animal Services, Watauga Code Compliance, Watauga Fire and Office of Emergency Management, Watauga Public Library, Watauga Municipal Court, Watauga Police Department, Watauga Recreation Department and Watauga Shop Local. The services provided to each different department are located in 6 different locations of the city which the I.T Department has connected together. Each titled program has its own set of services compliant to each department’s requirements.

Little is seen of these personnel of the I.T Department because they remain behind the scenes, but much is accomplished by them to ensure the business of the city is tied together thus making Watauga, “A Great Place to Live”.

Grace E. Hardeman Elementary School - Road Construction

Please note: Whispering Lane, from Cathy Drive to Maurie Drive, near Grace E. Hardeman Elementary School, will be closed to through traffic during construction of the storm drainage, water and wastewater mains. Whispering Lane is scheduled to be open to through traffic by mid-October. Prior to the start of school on August 22nd, the intersection of Whispering Lane at Maurie Drive will be closed to all traffic for reconstruction of the intersection, and will be closed until approximately OCTOBER 1st. During the closure of the intersection, parents dropping off students at Grace E. Hardeman Elementary School from Watauga Road are asked to proceed north on Maurie Drive, turn east (right) onto Warrior Road, turn west (left) onto Whispering Lane, and finally turn south (left) into the parking lot on the north side of Grace E. Hardeman Elementary School. This parking lot is the regular drop off area as used in the previous school year. There will be detour signs stating: “Detour Student Drop Off” with an arrow directing the route. The contractor for the City of Watauga plans to open the intersection of Whispering Lane as soon as work is complete. We appreciate everyone’s patience while we strive to improve our infrastructure in Watauga.  If anyone has comments or concerns, please call the Watauga Public Works Department at 817-514-5843. In case of emergency, please call 911. All parents were notified of this closure during meet the teacher night at the school prior to the start of school year.

Thanks to everyone who voted for the ¼ cent sales tax, making it possible to overlay the following four streets.

Street Division:

1.    Plum: complete.

2.    Shipp: complete.

3.    Bernadine: The Street division is currently in the process of repairing sub grade repairs and sod. The speed humps will be removed with a petition in place with over 80% of the neighborhood in favor of removing the speed humps. After the contractor finishes Sidewalk on Summit Ridge, they will move to Bernadine to replace sidewalk. Then the overlay contractor will move in and mill and overlay the street. The project has an estimated completion date near the end of September.

4.    Summit Ridge: As soon as the contractor finishes replacing sidewalk, the Street construction division will repair sub grades and sod. Then the contractor will mill and overlay. This project’s estimated completion will also be end of September.

Thank you for your patience during construction.

Street Cars

Storm Drain Division:

The Storm Drain division is striving to stay in compliance with the storm water permit from TCEQ. They are constantly maintaining the storm water system flowing through the City of Watauga. They mow and weed-eat the channels and right of ways. The street sweeper is also used to help with the good housekeeping portion of this permit.

The Storm Drain division inspects outfalls regularly to monitor illicit discharges, so we can come up with a plan to remedy the situation. They place markers on storm drain inlets to make residents aware not to dump in the storm drain inlets, because it will eventually drain to the creeks.

After completion of the sidewalk project on Summit Ridge, the contractor will move to Bernadine to replace numerous locations of damaged sidewalk.

The contractor will soon be starting on our yearly sidewalk repair list also.
