MAYOR’S MESSAGE

One of the most proficient and most effective departments in the City of Watauga is the Watauga Fire Department. Originally established in the early 60’s, the department has been through some changes. At first, the department consisted of volunteer firefighters and had two fire trucks stationed on Linda Drive. When the new City Hall was built on Whitley and Hightower, a new fire station was included along with two larger firetrucks which were housed there.  In 1982, the department was changed to the Department of Public Safety consisting of firemen, police and volunteers. In 2006, Civil Service was voted in and helped split the Fire and Police Departments into their own services. In 2000, the city obtained a new ambulance and a used one for back-up. In 2011, the fire department moved into a newly built fire station and in 2012, our new Quincey (ladder truck) vehicle was obtained. The department has grown to 19 elite and highly trained firefighters consisting of one Fire Chief, two Battalion Chiefs, three Lieutenants and fifteen firefighters. The type of training and activities involved as a firefighter are too numerous to mention but necessary to service this city and continue to make Watauga “A Great Place to Live.”
