Mayors Message

The school year has started and our students are in class. We ask everyone please be careful when driving in the school zones and obey all signs. There are other concerns to be watchful of as well and that is to be aware of all the communicable diseases that evolve during the start of the school season. This year mumps is coming back and is spreading from Louisiana through East Texas and Central Texas. West Nile is still active with the infestation of mosquitoes. In Watauga, West Nile tests have all been negative thus far. Pertussis is also active, especially with the younger school children.  Be watchful of all illnesses and our school children. If your child is not feeling well, please do not hesitate to take them to a doctor or clinic for health care. They are our future. Caring for our young is another way to make Watauga, “A great place to live”.

Watauga Captivated by Solar Eclipse

On August 21, 2017, the U.S. experienced a total solar eclipse and in Watauga, we had two residents set up in Capp Smith Park to share their love of the eclipse and all things celestial with the community.  Stan Chambers and Wayne Jennings set up their eclipse viewer around 9:30 a.m. and throughout the day delighted park goers by sharing their viewer and eclipse glasses. Mark your calendars now for the next total solar eclipse which is seven years away with prime viewing in north Texas on April 8, 2024.

Construction

AT&T Construction

AT&T is installing fiber optic lines on the streets shown on the two attached maps.  During this time, AT&T shall be boring in the right-of-way (ROW) of the street in front of your home.  The ROW is usually about 9.5 feet behind the back of curb.  Any damage caused shall be repaired by AT&T.  During this process, it is possible that the boring machine may hit your water service line to your home.  If this happens, AT&T shall repair it.  Please contact Public Works Department at 817.514.5806 so we may assist in getting the water service repaired.  The Area in Green is scheduled to be complete around September 11, 2017 and the Areas in Red and Blue are scheduled to be complete around September 22, 2017.

Chapman Road Rehabilitation – Tarrant County Precinct 3 Partnership

The Citizens of Watauga voted in May 2016 to reauthorize the ¼ Cent Sales Tax for Maintenance and Repair of Streets.  The Public Works Department oversees the construction projects which utilize these funds.  In an effort to stretch the funds further, the City of Watauga partnered with Tarrant County Precinct 3 in a program which allows the City to pay for all material, fuel, and traffic control.  The County provides free equipment and labor necessary to construct the road.

Tarrant County Precinct 3 Northeast Maintenance started construction of Chapman Road August 1, 2017 and expects to be complete by the end of August 2017. The limits of this construction project extend from Whitley Road to Rufe Snow Road.  The roadway rehabilitation project replaced the existing paving and subgrade.  The long term Capital Improvement Plan includes a future widening of Chapman Road which would include any necessary water, sewer, and drainage upgrades.

The City of Watauga appreciates the efforts of Tarrant County Precinct 3 Commissioner Gary Fickes for his continued support of maintaining streets in our City.  In prior years, Tarrant County Precinct 3 rehabilitated Watauga Road from Rufe Snow Road to Denton Highway.

Trash

Bulk Waste

Fall is almost here and it is a great time to make repairs to your home and fence.  It is also a good time to perform landscape maintenance, such as trimming trees.  It is good practice to coordinate these activities with your regular bulk trash pickup day to avoid storing waste materials for long periods.  You can find your monthly bulk trash pickup day on your water bill as well as on the city’s website, www.wataugatx.org .  The following are guidelines for bulk pickup:

•           Brush trimmings do not have to be tied and bundled but must not exceed four (4) feet in length or fifty (50) pounds in weight.
•           Limbs shall be stacked with trunks parallel to the street and behind the curb, so as not to block the street or the sidewalk.
•           Bulk items cannot be any larger than 5’ X 5’ X 5’.
•           Hazardous waste, construction material or remodeling debris will not be collected.
•           Bulk trash may be placed on the curb one day prior to the scheduled pick up date.
•           If you have larger quantities of bulk than is allowed in normal curbside pick-up, you may contact Progressive Waste at 817.222.2221 to schedule alternative options.
Remember maintaining your property keeps Watauga “A Great Place to Live”.

Water Conservation

Well we’re now approaching the hot summer months and it’s time to think about the topic of “Water Conservation”, although this should be practiced year round.
There are many techniques used today to help conserve and eliminate wasted water resources when going about our daily lives and with a little practice we can make a habit of saving not only water but money as well.  Here are a few:

INDOOR TIPS

1.         Soak pots and pans instead of letting the water run while you scrape them clean.
2.         Wash your fruits and vegetables in a pan of water instead of running water from the tap.
3.         Then use the water from washing the vegetables to water house plants.
4.         When doing laundry, match the water level to the size of the load.
5.         Shorten your shower by a minute or two and you’ll save up to 150 gallons per month.
6.         Turn off the water while brushing your teeth and save up to 4 gallons per minute.
7.         One drip every second adds up to five gallons per day!  Check your faucets for leaks.

OUTDOOR TIPS

1.         Reduce the amount of lawn in your yard by planting shrubs and ground covers appropriate to your site and region.
2.         Plant species native to your region.
3.         Consider Xeriscaping, this landscape method uses low-water-use plants to limit your water use.
4.         Contact your local conservation office for more information about xeriscaping with water-thrifty plants.
5.         Use a grease pencil to conduct a bucket test to check for swimming pool leaks. An unnatural water level drop may indicate a leak.
6.         Play fun games with your kids while learning how to save water.
Remember there are a number of ways to save water, and they all begin with you.
