Lawn Sprinkler Permit

When is a Lawn Sprinkler Permit Required?

A lawn sprinkler permit must be obtained before installing any lawn irrigation system that is permanently connected to the City’s water supply. A lawn sprinkler permit is not required when making repairs to the piping of an existing lawn irrigation system unless the back flow prevention assembly is being replaced.

Where Do I Go to Obtain a Lawn Sprinkler Permit?

Sprinkler permits may be obtained at the Public Works Department located in the Water Tower at 7800 Virgil Anthony Sr. Boulevard.

How Do I Obtain a Lawn Sprinkler Permit?

You must complete and submit an application to the Public Works Department. A contractor may do the work if licensed by the State of Texas as a lawn irrigation contractor and is registered with the City of Watauga. Homeowners may do the work themselves and no special tests or registration is required. However, in order to install your own lawn irrigation system, you must have filed a Homestead Exemption Certificate with the County Tax Office or present proof that you currently own and occupy the dwelling.

How Much Does a Lawn Sprinkler Permit Cost?

The fee for a lawn sprinkler permit is $33.50. This is subject to change.

How Long Does It Take to Get a Permit?

Normally, a sprinkler permit is issued while you wait. However, the amount of time varies based on the complexity of the work, but generally you can expect same day service.

Is There Any Special Equipment Required for a Sprinkler System?

Yes, in order to protect the public potable water supply, you must install an appropriate back flow prevention assembly (double-check valve) in accordance with State Plumbing Regulations.  Rain and freeze sensors are also required.

What Are the Requirements for a Double-Check
Back Flow Prevention Assembly?

A back flow prevention assembly box must be set back with a minimum of 12” of gravel below the bottom of the box (see Figure A).

There must be a minimum clearance of 6” on each side of the double-check assembly and the box (see Figure B).

From the handle tip of the double check gate valves, there must be a 3” clearance to both sides of the box (see Figure B).

Upon Installation of the Sprinkler System and Double-Check Assembly,
Are There Any Additional Requirements?

Yes, all double-check assemblies must be scheduled for final inspection by a licensed back flow assembly tester, and a report given to the City.
